Partners
Dr. Paul Averley (Partner) BDS, DGDP(UK)RCS, Dip SED, MPhil, PhD, MSc Implant
Paul qualified from Newcastle-upon-Tyne University, School of Dental Sciences in 1990. Following his vocational training, Paul has been involved for many years with innovating, leading and delivering services in primary care at Queensway Dental Clinic. In 1995 Paul completed his extended training in conscious sedation at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. By 1997 he had completed his diploma in conscious sedation. Additionally, in 1997, Paul obtained the Royal College of Surgeons’ Faculty of General Dental Practitioners’ Diploma in General Dental Practice.
Since 1997, Paul has been involved in establishing conscious sedation services in primary care to reduce dependency on hospital based general anaesthesia. This involvement led him to develop the evidence base for new conscious sedation techniques resulting in his achieving a Master of Philosophy in 2003 followed by a Doctorate of Philosophy in 2005 from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Following his PhD, Paul was invited to become a visiting academic for the University where he regularly contributes to the training of postgraduates in the Diploma and Conscious Sedation.
Most recently, in 2008, Paul completed his extended training in implant dentistry at the University of Warwick Medical School where he gained Master of Science in implant dentistry. In 2009 Paul was invited to become a regional tutor of implant dentistry for the University of Warwick.
As a result of his pioneering primary care based research in paediatric conscious sedation, Paul has been involved with drawing up national guidance on conscious sedation, working with the Standing Dental Advisory Committee on Conscious Sedation producing guidelines for “Standards for Conscious Sedation in Dentistry- A report from the Standing Committee on Dental Sedation, alternative techniques 2007”. Most recently, in 2010 Paul has been involved with a national guidance development group for the NICE producing guidelines for the use of sedation in children for therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
Since 2004, Paul has been a Trustee and Board Member of the Society for the Advancement of anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD). This Society is the second largest dental Society in the UK and is at the forefront of sedation. Through this involvement Paul has been instrumental in the development of a “Safe Sedation Practice Scheme” which benchmarks sedation practice through an inspection based quality assurance programme. This scheme is currently being rolled out in the UK. Since 2011 Paul has been involved in a SAAD working group to fund a paediatric based conscious sedation PhD. In addition Paul is a member of the SAAD editorial Board for the Journal of Conscious Sedation.
Dr. Ian Lane (Partner) BDS (Hons), MFGDP, Dip SED, MSc
Ian qualified with an Honours degree from
Newcastle University in 1998. In 2001, Ian
was awarded the MFGDP qualification
and this was followed by the Diploma
in Conscious Sedation in 2002 from
Newcastle University.
Ian has developed an interest in implant
and reconstructive dentistry and has been very active in
postgraduate education in this field. Ian has been a partner at
Queensway since 2006 and has been involved in university
research projects in implant care and conscious sedation. Ian
has shown continued commitment to further education with
his three year MSc implant programme at Warwick University,
where he was awarded “best implant student in 2008.”
Ian is keen to provide whole patient care where dentistry is
delivered in a conservative and minimally invasive manner. In
the last 2 years Ian has attended a one year restorative course
with Paul Tipton in Manchester, a surgical implant course at
Paris Medical School and a guided surgery residency with
Paulo Malo in Lisbon, Portugal. He has also attended various
scientific meetings in the UK and in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Dr. Uzma Olbrich (Partner) BDS, Dip SED
Uzma qualified from Newcastle Dental School in 1996. She completed her general Professional Training at Newcastle Dental Hospital before joining Queensway as a full time associate in 1998.
In 2000 she completed her Diploma in Conscious Sedation. She has actively been involved in the published research carried out at Queensway Anxiety Management Clinic, pioneering conscious sedation techniques in children with over 9 years experience in treating highly anxious patients.
Uzma is has a special interest in cosmetic dentistry and attends cosmetic dentistry courses. She has completed the Restorative Aesthetic Dentistry course led by the esteemed Michael Wise and is currently studying an MSc in Restorative Cosmetic Dentistry at the University of Central Lancashire.
Specialists
Guy Deeming GDC registered specialist in orthodontics(GDC no77851), BDS(Hons, MFDSRCS(Eng), MSc, MOrthRCS(Edin)
Orthodontics Specialist
Guy Deeming is Queensway’s specialist
orthodontist. This means he has
completed an extended period of training
in orthodontics in addition to general
dental training.
Guy qualified with honours in dentistry at the University
of Newcastle. He then completed his specialist training in
orthodontics at Guy’s and Kingston Hospitals in London.
As well as leading the orthodontic team at Queensway
Orthodontics, Guy is a visiting specialist in the Orthodontic
Department at Newcastle Dental Hospital, where he is involved
in teaching trainee orthodontists.
Guy is a certified provider of Incognito® lingual appliances and
Invisalign® clear aligners.
Dr. Matt Dorman BDS(Hons), FDSRCS, FFDRCSI (Oral Surgery), Dip Sed
Oral Surgery Specialist
Matt qualified from Newcastle with Honours in 1997.
After completing vocational training, he worked for two years as a Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Newcastle and Middlesbrough General Hospitals. Matt worked for nine years at Sunderland Royal Hospital, as a staff grade, and then as an Associate Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Matt gained his Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College Of Surgeons (ENG) in 2000. He completed his Diploma in Conscious Sedation in 2002. He then went on to pass his Specialist Fellowship Examination in Oral Surgery in 2003 and registered as a Specialist Oral Surgeon with the GDC in 2005.
Matt is an associate clinical lecturer teaching and examining on the Diploma in Conscious Sedation Course at Newcastle University. He has been involved in the teaching of oral surgery to postgraduates in his hospital post and has several publications in peer-reviewed journals in the fields of Oral Surgery and Sedation.
Matt has been involved in providing Specialist Oral Surgery Services at Queensway since 2001, joined the practice full time in October 2009. Outside work Matt enjoys spending time with his family, swimming and going to the gym.
Dr. Rebecca Hierons BDS(Lpool), FDSRCS(Edin)
Oral Surgery Specialist
Rebecca qualified from Liverpool in 1993 and has pursued a career in Oral Surgery for 16 years. She obtained her postgraduate Fellowship in Dental Surgery FDS RCS from Edinburgh in 1996, then spent 13 years working in Newcastle General Hospital formerly as a Staff Grade and later on as an Associate Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. During this time she undertook minor oral surgery (wisdom teeth etc) under local anaesthetic, sedation and general anaesthetic as well as gaining extensive experience in the field of facial trauma. She has additionally undertaken oral implantology and bone grafting both in dental practice and in hospital. She was admitted on to the Specialist list in Surgical Dentistry in 2000 and the Specialist List in Oral Surgery in 2007.
Rebecca started to work for Queensway part time in 2003 and left the hospital in March 2010 to take up a full time post to become lead clinician for the Durham and Darlington Oral Surgery service.
She is currently studying towards the postgraduate diploma in conscious dental sedation at Newcastle University.
Rebecca also carries out non-surgical anti-ageing facial treatments in Queensway. These specialist techniques utilise Botox® and dermal fillers to treat facial lines and wrinkles. Her background in facial trauma surgery makes her eminently suited to carrying out these specialised treatments.
Other interests include both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and she is currently involved in training dentists in Oral Surgery at Queensway. She also teaches on the national Advanced Trauma and Life Support (ATLS®) course for doctors having gained instructor status in 2009.
Rebecca is an active member of the British Association of Oral Surgeons (BAOS) having previously served on the council for 3 years and is currently the regional representative for the North East with her colleague, Jennifer Korsen. Rebecca also sits on the Durham and Darlington Local Dental Committee (LDC).
Dr. Julian Hawkings BDS, DGDP, FDS RCPS(Glasg)
Oral Surgery Specialist
Jules qualified from Liverpool in 1993. Since completing vocational training he has worked in the hospital service in both Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Special Care Dentistry.
He gained his DGDP qualification in 1996, and Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons (Glasgow) in 1998.
Jules currently divides his time between Queensway's Oral Surgery Specialist Clinic in County Durham, and at Teesside Hospital Services providing Special Care Dentistry. He has been part of the Queensway team since February 2008.
Dr. Wendy Keen BDS, FDSRCS(Eng)
Oral Surgery Specialist
Wendy qualified from Liverpool in 1987 and first worked at Liverpool Dental Hospital as a House Officer, followed by two years in general dental practice.
She subsequently returned to the Hospital Service and trained for 3 years as a Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Manchester Royal Infirmary, Fairfield General Hospital in Bury and Burnley General Hospital.
She was appointed Staff Grade in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Middlesbrough General Hospital in 1993, followed by James Cook University Hospital until Jan 2009, where she specialised in dentoalveolar surgery, sedation and implants .This position also involved teaching Oral Surgery and sedation to dentists.
Wendy gained her Fellowship in Dental Surgery from The Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1993 and she was registered as a Specialist in Oral Surgery in Dec 2000. She has 20 years experience of performing Oral Surgery under local anaesthetic, sedation and general anaesthesia.
Wendy joined the Oral Surgery Team in 2008 and is currently working at Queensway’s Specialist Oral Surgery Clinic in County Durham.
Outside work Wendy is an IDTA qualified Ballroom and Latin teacher.
Dr. Jennifer Korsen BDS, FDS, RCPS(Glasg)
Oral Surgery Specialist
Jennifer qualified from Glasgow in 1987 after which she worked in both a general dental practice and at Glasgow Dental Hospital, followed by a period employed as an SHO in Middlesbrough then as a Registrar in Glasgow.
Jennifer passed her Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1991. Since then she has worked for 19 years in Darlington Memorial Hospital where she presently holds an Associate Specialist post. She is registered as a Specialist Oral Surgeon with the General Dental Council.
Her specialist interest is the management of soft tissue lesions of the mouth particularly related to oral cancer and its prevention and precancerous lesions.
Jennifer has been part of the Queensway team since 2008.
Associates
Dr. Elizabeth Booth BSc(Hons), BDS, MBBS
Lizzie qualified in Dentistry in 1996 from Newcastle University. Following Vocational Training she then resumed her studies and obtained a degree in Medicine from Newcastle Medical school in 2005.
She has worked in General Dental Practice, Hospital and Community Dental Services and has over 8 years experience in treating anxious patients under sedation. In addition to her commitments at Queensway she is a Clinical Assistant in Orthodontics at the University Hospital of North Tees and is working towards accreditation as a Dentist with a Special Interest in Orthodontics.
Dr. William Carter BDS, Dip SED, MSc restorative cosmetic dentistry
Will graduated from Newcastle Dental School in 2004. He completed his General Professional Training at Newcastle Dental Hospital in 2006. In 2008, Will gained his Diploma in Conscious Sedation from Newcastle University. He is at present studying towards an MSc in Clinical Restorative Cosmetic Dentistry at the University of Central Lancashire.
Will has an interest in cosmetic dentistry and has attended multiple courses to improve his professional development within this field.
Dr. Wendy Cole BDS, MCs Clin perio
General dentist with special interest in periodontics
Wendy graduated from Bristol University in 1990 and following vocational training has worked exclusively in general practice in Yorkshire and the North East.
Wendy joined the team at Queensway in March 2010 and limits her work to periodontics, treating gum disease and providing cosmetic gum treatments.
Wendy has formalised her training in periodontics and gained her MSc in December 2010.
Wendy is a member of both the British Society of Periodontology and the American Academy of Periodontology. She continually updates her clinical knowledge by attending many courses both in the UK & abroad, most recently completed a masterclass in aesthetic periodontal surgery and regenerative techniques at the University of Bern, Switzerland.
Dr. Tim Peach BDS, MFDGP(UK).RCS(Eng)
General dentist with special interest in endodontics
Tim gained his dental qualification in 1991 and since then has been committed to continuing postgraduate education to allow him to practice the very best that modern dentistry has to offer, including root canal treatment. Tim joined the teem at Queensway in September 2011.
As part of his continuing personal development in 2007, he completed an extended endodontic foundation course. He has also trained in Switzerland and Santa Barbara to further extend his endodontic experience.
He has lectured on endodontics in the North East since 2001 and after passing his MFGDP, was regional tutor for this qualification from 2006-2010.
Dr. Paul Howlett BDS, MFDS, Dip SED
Paul qualified from Newcastle Dental School with Honours in 2001. He completed his General Professional Training at Newcastle Dental Hospital during which time he was awarded his MFDS qualification from the of the Royal College of Surgeons(Edin) in 2003. Following his two year hospital post, Paul worked for five years in a busy NHS practice in Sunderland and was awarded the Diploma in Conscious Sedation in 2005. Paul was very happy to join the Queensway team in April 2008 and have the opportunity to extend and develop his skills in caring for anxious patients.
Dr. Mihai Neacsu DMD, MPh
Mihai qualified from Bucharest Dental School in 2000. After graduation he opened a private dental practice in Bucharest. In 2005 he completed a Master's in Healthcare Management and Public Health at Carol Davila University. Mihai moved to the UK in 2008, and in 2009 he joined Queensway as a full time associate.
He has an interest in oral surgery, cosmetic dentistry and endodontics.
Dr. Mark Pearsall BDS, MFDS, Dip SED
Mark qualified from Newcastle Dental School in 2001. He completed his vocation training in Northumberland for one year, before completing a year as a Senior House Officer in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department in Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Mark was awarded his MFDS qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edin) in 2003, and joined Queensway Dental Practice in the same year. He was awarded a Diploma in Conscious Sedation with merit from Newcastle University in 2007.
Dr. Benjamin Scott BDS, Dip SED
Ben qualified in 2000 from the University of Newcastle. He then worked in a mainly private practice in Ripon, North Yorkshire where he completed his Vocational Training. It was here he developed an interest in both cosmetic dentistry and the management of anxious and phobic children and adults.
He completed the Diploma in Conscious Sedation in 2005 and joined Queensway Dental Practice later that year. He continues to attend cosmetic dentistry courses, conferences and seminars to develop his interest in this field.
Dr. Benjamin Smith BDS, MFDS, Dip SED
Ben qualified from Newcastle Dental School, in June 2001. He completed his General Professional Training at Newcastle Dental Hospital and Queensway Dental Practice, before coming to work full-time as a general dentist at Queensway in August 2003. Ben also gained his MFDS qualification in 2003 from Royal College of surgeons (Edin).
He went on to complete his Diploma in Conscious Sedation in 2007 and finds helping anxious patients a rewarding aspect of his work. He continues to develop his professional skills on a daily basis and has taken on a training role for newly qualified dentist.
Dr. Piotr Sztencel DMD
Piotr qualified from Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland in 2001. After graduation he worked for four years as general dental practitioner in a private practice in Cracow and for 1 year he also held a post a junior assistant at the Paediatric Department at Collegium Medicum of Jagiellonian University.
Piotr moved to UK in 2005 to work as general dental practitioner and during this time he developed interest in occlusion, restorative dentistry and anxiety management. Piotr joined Queensway Team in 2009. He is currently a member of the SAAD and is at present studying towards Diploma in Conscious Sedation at Newcastle University.
Dr. Diana Taylor BChD
Diana qualified from Leeds Dental School in 1992 and then spent a further year working in the Leeds Dental Institute as a House Officer. She completed a year at Chesterfield Royal Infirmary working as a Senior House Officer in the Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics, before joining Queensway Dental Practice in 1995.
Diana enjoys all aspects of dentistry, but has a special interest in Orthodontics and has attended multiple courses and workshops over the years. As well as providing general dentistry care to a high standard, Diana is a valued member of the Queensway Orthodontic team led by Specialist Orthodontist Guy Deeming.
Dental Laboratory
Richard Elliot BTEC, BSc(Hons), Dip PS (Implantolgoy), LBIDST
Richard completed a BTEC National Diploma in Dental Technology at Newcastle College in 1999. He qualified from Manchester Metropolitan University with an Honours Degree in Dental Technology in 2002. He has over 10 years’ experience working as a Dental Technician gained in laboratories across the north of England and a laboratory in Australia.
He began his career working in the gold work and implant departments and in 2008 he took on a ceramist role to develop skills in this discipline and gain confidence in all aspects of dental technology.
In 2007 Richard was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Implantology at Manchester Metropolitan University and this is where his key interests lie. His main passion is for restoring implant and complex multi unit cases and he is committed to ensuring that all restorations are completed to the highest standard.
In 2006 Richard gained Platinum Approval by Straumann, a leading implant company.
In 2009 Richard was approached to join the committee board of the British Institute of Dental & Surgical Technologists (BIDST) and became the Vice Chairman of BIDST in 2010. He is currently working towards establishing BIDST as the leading organisation for dental technologists.
He formed Queensway Dental Laboratory with the partners of Queensway Dental Practice in January 2011 and he is responsible for managing the laboratory. He is excited to take on this new position and grow the laboratory team. He is dedicated towards the laboratory’s success and achieving a high standard of service.
