At Queensway Skin Clinic we offer a range of facial aesthetics treatments to help treat the signs of ageing.
BTX and dermal fillers
At Queensway Dental Clinic we offer injectable anti-ageing treatments BTX and dermal fillers to subtly reduce fine lines, creases and wrinkles, leaving you with smoother, more youthful looking skin to complement your smile.
These products can also be used to stop teeth clenching and grinding, to treat some headaches and facial pain, to treat ‘gummy smiles’, to treat excess sweating and to slim the lower face for facial rejuvenation.
Our specialist oral surgeon and facial aesthetic practitioner Dr Rebecca Hierons offers new patients a free consultation so you can speak one-to-one about the results you want to achieve and the types of treatment available.
What causes the skin to age?
For many people, looking young is an important factor in feeling good about themselves. However, age is an unstoppable process and as we get older our skin loses its natural elasticity and wrinkles develop.
With increasing age, the hyaluronic acid content of our skin – so important for water retention – decreases. Oil-producing (sebaceous) glands become less active, and skin becomes dryer. The skin also loses fat so it looks less plump and smooth and its youthful colour and glow fades. Meanwhile, gravity is also at work, pulling at the skin and causing it to sag.
Wrinkles and lines are not only caused by the ageing process but also by everyday exposure to sun and smoking. They often first appear around the eyes and the mouth.
There are two major types of lines that develop in the ageing face:
• Dynamic lines – due to muscle activity
• Static lines – due to volume loss.
Both of these components can best be treated by a combination of BTX and dermal fillers to produce a subtle, natural, youthful look. It is important to avoid over-treatment – friends and colleagues should think you have just returned from a relaxing holiday rather than ‘having anything done’.
Botulinum toxin type A (BTX)
The product used at Queensway is Azzulure® (Galderma) which is one of the few FDA approved botulinum toxins on the market. It has been adapted from Dysport® which has had a 20-year long history of product consistency and safety.
It works to relax selected muscles that pull the skin and cause lines and wrinkles. As the muscles relax the lines will soften or even disappear completely. It can also be used to treat (partially relaxing) the muscles of the face, head and neck involved in clenching and grinding the teeth that can also contribute to headaches.
It is useful in the case of a high smile line or ‘gummy smile’ where it is used to relax muscle pull on the upper lip and reduce the amount of tooth and gum show.
Fourthly, it can be used to treat excess sweating in the forehead and axillary (armpit) areas where it stops the sweat glands from functioning.
Lastly, it can be used selectively to slim the lower face and along with mid-face augmentation with dermal fillers (restoring the cheekbone and tear trough areas) can help to rejuvenate the face and turn back the clock.
The treatment consists of a small number of tiny injections, given with a minimum of discomfort that causes relaxation of the targeted muscles. There may be a small amount of swelling and redness afterwards but this generally settles very quickly. Not everyone is suitable for treatment and you will need to have a consultation initially to discuss your needs and ensure treatment is right for you.
It takes two weeks for the product to be fully effective, but you will notice the first changes after four to five days. The effects of BTX last three to six months depending on your response, but repeat treatments have been shown to last for longer.
These clever products are designed to plump up static wrinkles and lines in your skin, softening them and giving a more smooth and youthful look. They can also be used for shaping and sculpting areas such as jaw lines, noses, chins and cheekbones.
The products we use at Queensway are made from hyaluronic acid, the substance that occurs naturally in your body. In the connective tissue of your skin it is essential for water retention and tissue repair – especially after sun damage. It is one of the main components responsible for that plump, smooth, youthful look in young skin.
Juvéderm® (Allergan) and Restylane® (Galderma) are fillers comprised of a smooth consistency hyaluronic acid based gel which are injected to restore volume, fill lines, wrinkles and folds and redefine lips. Unlike other fillers, neither are granular which means that they are able to flow easily into the skin, giving a smooth, natural appearance. They also contains a local anaesthetic (numbing solution) which makes the treatment process much more comfortable.
The treatment consists of either a series of small injections or a single site injection with a flexible cannula, depending on the areas being treated. Additional local anaesthetic (in the form of a cream or injection) can also be given if necessary to make the procedure completely pain-free. Again, there may be some swelling, redness or occasionally bruising but this is easily concealable if necessary and will not last for long. The effect is instant.
Again, not everyone is suitable for treatment and you will need to have a consultation initially to discuss your needs and ensure treatment is right for you.
These products are not permanent but the benefit can last for anything up to a year, depending on skin quality, quantity of product placed and general health and lifestyle.
You’re in safe hands
Queensway Dental Clinic is on the ‘Treatments You Can Trust’ register with the IHAS (Independent Healthcare Advisory Services). This seeks to ensure patient safety by setting rigorous standards, which must be met by organisations and practitioners who provide non-surgical injectable cosmetic treatments. These include botulinum toxin and injectable fillers, as well as the administration of local anaesthesia for pain relief in advance of these injectable cosmetic treatments.
This means that we are able to display the IHAS Register of Injectable Cosmetic Providers Quality Assurance Mark – the official quality mark to look out for when considering any injectable cosmetic treatments. Clinics or individuals without this quality assurance mark should be avoided.
To make treatment more comfortable we can offer numbing cream and numbing injections which can be discussed in the initial free consultation. All patients will also receive a complimentary pot of auriderm cream to aid the healing process and help prevent bruising.
After treatment all patients will be offered a complementary review appointment with Rebecca.
