Introduction to orthodontics

What is orthodontic treatment?
The branch of dentistry that specialises in aligning teeth is called orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment usually involves wearing an appliance (brace). This puts gentle pressure on specific teeth to move them into the right place, thereby straightening and improving the appearance and bite of your teeth..
It has been reported in dental journals that more than half of all twelve-year-old children would benefit from orthodontic treatment.

What are braces?
There are different kinds of appliances. Some can be removed while others are fixed in place.

Removable braces These are made of acrylic and usually have wire clips and springs or screws to move specific teeth.
Fixed braces These are bonded to the teeth and cannot be removed during the course of treatment. They are made of small brackets that are glued to the teeth and joined together with a straightening wire. Fixed braces can be used on upper and lower teeth. Once the treatment is finished, the brackets and glue are cleaned off the teeth.
Invisalign This is a revolutionary breakthrough in orthodontic appliance design. Invisalign is a virtually invisible brace system - so no one can tell you're straightening your teeth. The system uses a series of clear aligners that are custom-molded to fit you based on the latest computerised technology. The aligners are changed every 2 weeks, gradually repositioning your teeth. Invisalign is only recommended for people over the age of 14years. They are suitable for many, but not everybody.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Anywhere from six months to about two years, depending upon the complexity of the problem.

Will I have to have teeth removed?
Only when absolutely necessary. Many people embark on a course of orthodontic treatment without the need for dental extractions.

Will it hurt?
Orthodontic treatment is not painful but there may be some discomfort while you become accustomed to wearing your brace for the first few days; but this soon passes. Any discomfort can usually be eased with normal painkillers.

What is the ideal age for orthodontic assessment?
Orthodontics can be carried out at any age and many adults are now taking up the offer of orthodontic treatment. Generally children are seen from the age of nine for their first assessment.

Is it available on the NHS?
For moderately severe cases orthodontic treatment can be provided on the NHS, up to the age of 18. Under the NHS treatment must be deemed necessary on aesthetic or dental health grounds.

How much does private orthodontic treatment cost?
Private contract fees vary according to the complexity and duration of your treatment, and to the type and number of appliances needed to provide the best possible result. We offer flexible payment and interest-free options to enable you to achieve your ideal smile. Please ask for details.
