Julian graduated in Dentistry in 1993 from the University of Liverpool (BDS) and then trained in general dentistry receiving his Diploma in General Dental Practice from the Royal College of Surgeons in London in 1996 (DGDP UK).

Following this, Julian embarked on his career in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, starting out in the Midlands before returning to his native North East where he has worked predominantly ever since. He was awarded his Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow FDSRCPS) in 1998 and then recognised as a Specialist in Oral Surgery.

Julian also developed an interest in caring for patients with ‘Special Dental Needs’ and worked concurrently in the Community Dental Service as well as in Oral and Maxillofacial Service, where he often acted as the link between the two service helping provide joined up patient care to this often overlooked dental group. He obtained specialist status in Special Care Dentistry in 2010 and is often asked for advice in both disciplines.

Julian also has the Diploma in Conscious Dental Sedation and is the past Chairman and President of North Yorkshire, South Durham and Cleveland Section of the British Dental Association. He has represented colleagues locally and nationally on various dental committees (BDA, CCCPHD, SDC) and is a member of the British Association of Oral Surgeons (BAOS) in addition to multiple other associations.

He continues with his own medical & dental professional update training and has been involved in successfully mentoring colleagues in Oral Surgery and Conscious Sedation during the last two years.

Beyond Oral Surgery, Julian also has an Honours degree in Zoology from Durham University and was previously a professional skipper and auxiliary Coastguard, aboard a converted fishing trawler off the West Coast of Scotland carrying out wildlife exploration. He continues his love of the sea with frequent trips to the Clyde Estuary.

He is married, with three children and lives only three miles from where he was born.
