Specialist Periodonticsin Sunderland & the North East
Specialist periodontist care for periodontitis, advanced and complex gum disease

At Queensway Dental’s Sunderland Specialist Referral Centre, our specialist periodontist provides advanced care for periodontitis and complex gum disease for patients across Sunderland and the North East. We help people whose gum problems are more advanced or persistent, including those that have not responded to routine treatment.
Whether you have been referred by your own dentist or are looking for a periodontist yourself, your care begins with a thorough periodontal assessment of your gums, the supporting bone and your overall oral health. Your periodontist will explain your options clearly and plan a course of treatment around your needs, working alongside your own dentist where appropriate.

What is a periodontist?
A periodontist is a dentist with advanced training in preventing, diagnosing and treating gum disease and the tissues and bone that support your teeth. A periodontist focuses on more complex or advanced cases, beyond the gum care usually provided in general practice, and often works closely with your own dentist.
If your gums are healthy and you simply want to keep them that way, our gum health and dental hygiene teams can help. A periodontist is usually needed when gum disease is advanced or persistent, or is affecting the bone that holds your teeth in place.
What is the treatment for periodontitis?
The treatment for periodontitis depends on how advanced it is, but the aim is always the same: to stop the disease progressing, stabilise the teeth and protect the bone that supports them. Care is usually staged, and your periodontist will tailor it to your gums.
Non-surgical periodontal treatment
Often the first step, this involves careful deep cleaning below the gumline to remove the bacteria and hardened deposits that drive the disease. Many patients respond well to this stage alone.
Periodontal surgery
Where pockets are deep or bone has been lost, minor surgery lets your periodontist clean the roots directly. Regenerative procedures can sometimes help to rebuild lost support around the teeth.
Ongoing periodontal maintenance
Periodontitis is a long-term condition, so regular specialist reviews and professional cleaning are key to keeping it stable and protecting the results of your treatment.

How specialist periodontal care may help
Every case is different, but specialist periodontal care can make a real difference across a range of situations. Depending on your needs, your periodontist may be able to:
- Assess and manage advanced or complex periodontitis
- Treat gum disease that has not responded to routine care
- Stabilise loose teeth affected by bone loss
- Manage gum recession and more complex gum concerns
- Provide periodontal surgery and regenerative treatment
- Prepare and maintain the gums ahead of implant or restorative treatment
- Support long-term gum health with a tailored maintenance plan
If you are not sure whether you need to see a periodontist, a consultation is the best place to start. We will assess your gums, explain what is happening and, where helpful, work alongside your own dentist to plan the next steps.

Common questions about periodontitis
Treatment is usually staged. It often starts with non-surgical deep cleaning below the gumline to remove the bacteria and hardened deposits that drive the disease. If pockets are deep or bone has been lost, minor periodontal surgery or regenerative treatment may be needed. Ongoing specialist maintenance then keeps the condition stable over the long term.
Early gum disease, known as gingivitis, can usually be reversed. Periodontitis causes permanent damage and cannot be fully cured, but with specialist treatment and regular maintenance it can be controlled and stabilised, protecting your teeth and the bone that supports them.
All periodontists are dentists, but a periodontist has completed several years of additional training focused on the gums and the structures that support the teeth. They manage more advanced or complex gum problems that go beyond routine general dental care.
Both are welcome. Many patients are referred by their own dentist, but you can also contact us directly to arrange an assessment. If you have been referred, we keep your dentist informed and return you to their care once your specialist treatment is complete.
Our specialist periodontist is based at Queensway Dental's Sunderland Specialist Referral Centre and sees patients from across Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and the wider North East, with some travelling from further afield across the UK. You can book a free consultation online or ask your dentist to refer you.
Your periodontist carefully examines your gums, measures the depth of any pockets around the teeth and checks the supporting bone, usually with x-rays. They will then explain what they have found and talk you through a treatment plan designed around your gums and your goals.
